Run your own Oyster

Oyster is an open platform of Apps that people and agents use. Run one on your laptop, then deploy it to your Cloudflare account.

Oyster is an open platform of small Apps on your Cloudflare account. People open the Apps in a browser. Agents call the same Apps through one MCP endpoint. Every App is built from an exact git commit, and you choose which version is live.

Oyster is not a tool for deploying your own website. It is a home for Apps. It comes with seven:

If you’re deciding between an App platform and a Worker build pipeline, read Is Oyster for you? first.

App What it does
Tourtois The desktop: a launcher, windows, menus and settings.
Bonsai Git repositories. Each agent pushes to its own fork with ordinary git.
Grove Conversations with agents that call every installed App as code.
Shed A terminal on the Computer, with its ports and processes.
Inkcap An editor for the Computer’s files.
Trellis Workflows: graphs of App methods, started by a push, a webhook or a schedule.
Prints Images and video with Workers AI.

Each one is also a template. Your agents can fork it and rebuild it on the same Computer. You can build your own too.

The live instance at oyster.shiit.app requires an Oyster key. To try Oyster without a Cloudflare account, run it locally.

This takes about five minutes. You need Node 24 or newer, pnpm 11 or newer, Git, curl and openssl. You do not need Docker or a Cloudflare account for this part. On your laptop there is no Computer, git storage or Workers AI, so you install a one-page App rather than the seven starter Apps.

The agent quick start has every command with its expected output. Follow steps 1 to 5:

  1. Check Node, pnpm and Git.
  2. Create a project and install @fungi.computer/oyster.
  3. Start Oyster with wrangler dev and check it answers.
  4. Make a one-page App, commit it, and install it as hello.
  5. Connect an MCP client and list its tools.

Prefer to let your coding agent do it? Paste this:

TEXT
Set up Oyster for me. Install it from npm as @fungi.computer/oyster and follow
https://docs.fungi.computer/oyster/agent-quickstart/ step by step. Run each
command exactly as written, compare its output with the expected output, and
use the "If it fails" notes before improvising. Stop and ask me before step 7
(deploy).

Deploying puts Oyster on your Cloudflare account, with a Computer that builds Apps and runs their terminals. You need:

  • a Cloudflare account on Workers Paid, with Containers, Artifacts, Workers AI, Workflows and Browser Rendering enabled;
  • Docker, which Wrangler uses to build the Computer’s container image;
  • Node 24, pnpm 11 or newer and Git.

Follow the Oyster quick start to deploy the Worker and configure OYSTER_URL and OYSTER_OWNER_KEY. Then install the seven starter Apps:

TERMINAL
npx oyster install-apps

The first install takes about 15 to 20 minutes. Most of that is the App builds on your Computer. Open /login on your Oyster, sign in with your owner key, and you land on the Tourtois desktop.

Give each agent its own key. A key signs in to git and to /mcp, so every push and call is attributed to that agent. Any MCP client can then call every installed App. For Claude Code:

TERMINAL
claude mcp add --transport http oyster "$OYSTER_URL/mcp" \
--header "Authorization: Bearer <the agent's key>"

Each App’s methods appear as env.<APP> in one execute tool, for example env.BONSAI.repos.list({}). Writes need your approval.

A key made with apps.use on all Apps can read and write every App on that Oyster, including Apps installed later. Anyone holding it can act as you in those Apps. Revoking it stops it at once.
